Roquette - Initiating a new standard for food safety excellence

The Bureau Veritas auditors were top professionals. Their communications and project management skills made moving to ISO 22000 easier.
Eric Barnier
Corporate Quality System Manager, Roquette

Roquette is one of Europe’s largest starch and starch derivatives businesses. World leader for polyols (sugar alcohols), Roquette’s reputation has been built on research of international status; some of the most advanced production facilities in the world; a global network of offices and agents; and a uniquely comprehensive, proven service philosophy..  Roquette needs to supply safe, high quality goods to its clients, as they use them to create and market their own products.  In addition to meeting international quality standards, Roquette undergoes national audits requested by its clients to assure their own end-customers.  However, meeting everyone’s food safety qualifications meant that Roquette used two certification bodies to perform multiple audits each year.  Roquette decided to reduce audit time, while continuing to boost its products’ safety and quality and meeting required standards.

Instead of using two certification bodies to perform a lot of audits per year in a non-coordinated way for his French plants, Roquette selected Bureau Veritas to conduct them simultaneously.  Bureau Veritas won the assignment because of its international network, its experience managing multi-audits concurrently, and its solid track record with food certification. Indeed, Bureau Veritas led the team of specialists from 23 countries that developed ISO 22000, the first-ever international food safety standard.  ISO 22000 was published by theInternational Organisation for Standardization (ISO) in 2005 and is recognized in over 40 countries.  It includes best practices from all national and regional food safety guidelines covering the entire supply chain.  As part of Roquette’s on-going drive to innovation and customer service, it decided to earn the ISO 22000 certification.  The standard’s key components include active communication across the food chain, comprehensive hazard analysis and control, and integrated system management.  Before launching ISO 22000 standards throughout the company, Roquette decided to start with a pilot project in in one area of manufacturing food products.  The idea was to build food safety excellence in a portion of the test plant, and then extend it throughout the factory.  In 2006, Bureau Veritas certified Roquette’s first ISO 22000 compliant workshops.  Later that same year, Bureau Veritas certified a second plant. Anticipated future steps include validating all European corn and wheat processing factories, and eventually adding potato and pea processing factories to the list.

With Bureau Veritas conducting audits simultaneously, Roquette reduces the amount of travel costs and workdays associated with the process by 25%, which allows more time and money to work on core business.  Thanks to ISO 22000, Roquette’s food chain benefits from industry best practices and produces safer and higher quality products.  By deciding to implement the new ISO 22000 standards and earn the certification, Roquette demonstrated its leadership and commitment to food safety.  With such a supplier, clients tend to be more assured, to show stronger loyalty, and accordingly they are in a better position to satisfy their end-customers.
