Sony - SONY proves its global commitment to the environment

BVQI has been a valuable partner in helping Sony establish a Global Environment Management System. We appreciate the close working relationship we enjoy with BVQI, and value their consistent approach worldwide.
Hidemi Tomita,

General Manager, Corporate Social & Environmental Affairs Dept., Sony

When cadmium was detected in the cable of a Playstation 2, Sony withdrew the product from sale in Europe. The incident meant that Sony lost significant Christmas sales in Europe that year. Concerned with the safety of its customers and determined to preserve its quality image, Sony decided it needed to change how it runs its environmental management system. Sony had already implemented ISO 14001 (environment) around the world but this covered individual sites only and certification was carried out by a number of different bodies. Sony did not feel this approach would protect them from similar incidents in the future. What was needed was a single.

Sony chose BVQI because of its proven track record with global contracts and for the ability to offer a comprehensive range of services. It was decided to implement a Global Environmental Management System (GEMS). BVQI carries out the GEMS audit which is in line with ISO 14001. BVQI also helps Sony fulfil its corporate global objectives outlined by its internal program, GM 2005 (Green Management). This program aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and eliminate certain heavy metals and chemicals from the manufacturing process by 2010.BVQI is able to leverage its worldwide network to conduct visits to all of Sony's sites around the world and verify data. The first GEMS audit took place in April 2004. BVQI GEMS certification covers 373 Sony sites all over the world; these sites are involved in a wide variety of activities reflecting Sony's diversity, from electronics and computer entertainment to music, pictures and finance. To manage the worldwide audit, BVQI and Sony are able to share reporting information efficiently via BVnet, an online database facility open to Bureau Veritas clients. BVQI staff input audit reports, certificates and detailed information. Audit progress can also be monitored via BVnet. An automatic update of any progress is sent weekly to both Sony headquarters and the relevant BVQI key account manager.

With the Global Environmental Management System in place, Sony considers that its primary goals have been achieved: the system provides the desired protection for Sony customers, employees and the environment. Subsequently, GEMS protects Sony's excellent corporate image. GEMS also performs the vital function of helping Sony to avoid legal non-compliance in all its markets. In the past, Sony was certified by a large number of bodies making it virtually impossible to evaluate the level of management at each site. GEMS has introduced consistency of work practices on an international level, and assessing management on a global basis is now much simpler.
