VT Plus Training - Boosting performance with certification

The new risk based audit system has allowed us to take a whole organization approach to the audit process
Caroline Groom,
Strategic Planning & Quality Executive, VT Plus Training

Depending to some extent on government funding from the UK's Learning Skills Council, VT Plus Training had performance targets to meet to continue to qualify for funding. This was a critical business issue yet was not sufficiently covered for them in a classic ISO 9001 certification approach. Three issues were key. They needed to attract the right level of benefits; properly monitor and review delegates' progress; and ensure success targets were being met.

BVQI implemented a risk based auditing tool for VT Plus Training. Risk Based Auditing (or RBA) is an innovative sector-specific certification approach based on ISO 9001:2000. Its aim is to allow an organization to gain increased economic benefit and performance enhancement through certification, by focusing on the key areas of risk within the organization. This auditing tool, custom-built for VT Plus Training, integrates all their business processes into a single spreadsheet along with all the usual ISO 9001 elements. First audits took place in January 2005, and the second audits in mid-2005. Risk based auditing facilitates and supports continuous improvement of management systems. It helps VT Plus Training to focus on processes that matter the most in contributing to their fundamental business goals. Risk based auditing assists VT Plus Training in objective setting, and it is carried out in such a way as to lead to measurable results. It takes certification from a simple quality and conformity role to an active role in performance enhancement. In line with classic risk management principles, BVQI applied a plan-do-check-act model for the client. In going far beyond ISO 9001 via an RBA approach, BVQI was able to deliver a product offering tangible business benefits.

Using this tool, VT Plus Training has been able to clearly measure key business indicators that are specific to its organization. It has also facilitated planning future action based on the risk to the business. The client has found the reporting system of particular value as they can measure the perceptions of the management team against what is happening throughout the organization. The integration of the ISO indicators has also allowed VT Plus Training to measure its performance against the standards as part of the process without any extra work. In addition, the risk based audit system allows them to review trends over time and the effectiveness of actions they have taken to reduce the risks. VT Plus Training benefits from clearer vision of results enabling them to address long-term issues more easily.
