Helping drive Toyota's environmental certification program

05/12/08

Environmental certification ensures that products and services meet with certain standards, right from development phase. Labeling with special logos can also be an efficient way to communicate on “environmental friendliness” to consumers.

No independent inspection required
Toyota Industries’ new program is part of its Fourth Environmental Action Plan, aimed at helping to reduce global warming and use resources more efficiently. It is based upon Type II of the International Standards Organization’s three environmental labeling standards: ISO 14021, under which a company assesses its own compliance. No extra third-party inspection is legally required to prove standards are being met.

Extra expertise
However, says Tsuyoshi Nakao, <manager, global environment group> at Bureau Veritas Japan's Environment department: We have been working successfully with Toyota Industries for some time now on Corporate Social Responsibility related issues. When our client wanted to make sure this new program was reliable, our services were called upon to carry out a full independent review.

Overseeing the global process
Assessment is divided into two key stages. The first is Factor Assessment, which measures how much more eco-efficient a new version of a product is compared to the existing version. The second is Development Processes Assessment which includes assessment of factors such as increased fuel efficiency and reduced size and weight. Explains Tsuyoshi Nakao: “Our job was to review Toyota Industries’ procedure to report whether the standard of ISO14021 were being met.  We also reviewed the Application documents for their environmental certification whether the information is appropriate.” Only products that satisfy BV’s review and all criteria are granted the special Toyota Industries environmental label.

A show of confidence
We are very happy to have gained our client’s trust to this extent, continues Tsuyoshi Nakao. This is a positive sign from Toyota Industries, demonstrating our leading reputation in certification. He goes on: “It is also encouraging in terms of future growth from other clients seeking our expertise.
