Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services Supports World Environment Day 2012

4 June, 20112 - Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services (BVCPS) has announced it will again celebrate and support the 5 June World Environment Day (WED).  In line with this year’s WED theme, Green Economy: Does it include you, BVCPS launches a company-wide campaign to encourage its worldwide employees to take part in promoting low carbon, resource efficiency, and social responsibility for the planet.

Activities scheduled to honour the World Environment Day around the world include:

§  “Green Offices:  With the launch of Bureau Veritas’ environment caring program –Creating a Green Office in US in 2011, the company has implemented green offices worldwide with environmentally friendly practices. Such practices include reduction in energy and water consumption, reuse of papers and packaging, recycle of used office supplies and batteries, and many more. On a regular basis, email notices and knowledge sharing sessions with employees are also being conducted to share tips on a green daily routine.

§   “Green Home Gardening Exhibit”: During 1st – 8th June, the US Buffalo location has organized an educational exhibit focused on “Green Home Gardening” for the employees. This traveling exhibit features “how to” guides for gardening with limited space, rain barrels, composting, garden boxes, etc. with display for handy gardening tips. Employees are encouraged to submit their ideas’ for how the Buffalo location can become more environmentally friendly.

§  “Lights Out Event”:  The Asia locations will participate in a lights-out event during lunch time on or before 5 June, the WED Day. Participating locations include Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. As a continued effort of energy saving, some Bureau Veritas’ locations have adopted this lights-out practice during lunch hour or extend hours on business days.

§  Ride a Bike – Sponsor a Tree” / "Employer Subsidy for Public Transportation" Programs: The Germany location has implemented two company sponsored Green programs to encourage the employees to exercise their environmentally friendly practices regularly.  Starting June, through the “Ride a Bike – Sponsor a Tree” program, the BVCPS Germany sponsors a tree to the local community when the employees ride a bike to work to earn sufficient “Green” points by the location for the total kilometers traveled. Likewise, the “Employer Subsidy for Public Transportation” program provides the employees who give preference to public transportation to work with a subsidy by the company for their annual public transportation ticket purchase.

§   Meat-free Day”: The Taiwan location has implemented a regular “Meat-free Day” with a non-meat luncheon to be served during the first week of the month. The objectives of this monthly event are to encourage employees to consider the effects of carbon emissions from food production and heighten awareness of their carbon footprint.

§  “Beach Clean-up Day”: The Vietnam location organized a visit to the local popular Vung Tau- Chi Linh & Bai Sau Beach on 2 June to remove waste materials disposed by people. Participated by the volunteer employees and families from the BV and CPS’ Vietnam offices, the activity aims to help preserve the nature and environment that we treasure.

§  “Shoe Collection Event”: During May, UK locations organized a shoe collection event to encourage its staff to bring in their unwanted shoes to be recycled.  The collected shoes will be sent, through a specialized shoe recycling company in the UK, to developing nations where they are refurbished for reuse. Similarly, a few Bureau Veritas’ locations had organized an employee used clothing collection to donate to charity.

§  “Preserve Our Wetlands Trip”: The US Buffalo location organized a visit to the local Tifft Nature Preserve to plant trees and shrubs as well as to remove invasive species on 1 June. For the fourth consecutive year, the Green Team of Bureau Veritas and volunteer employees participated in this activity to help preserve the ecological balance of the Nature Reserve.

Other special events at individual locations around the globe include:

·         The initiation of an electronic quiz polling employees and clients on the ideas of environmentally-conscious activities that the Bureau Veritas could take part in.

·         The organization of a painting competition by the employees’ children illustrating their environmental preservation ideas. The winning paintings will be exhibited on the WED Day.

·         The carrying out of various competitions for the best ideas of “Environmental Preservation”, “My Low Carbon Day”, “Green Economy”, etc.

·         The circulation of an email notice, stickers, banners and flyers on WED to employees to promote environment caring with tips.

·         The use of auto timer of the air-conditioning and lighting after office hours.

·         The organization of a site visit to a local chemicals recycling company.

·         The initiation of taking carpool or public transportation to work to help reduce carbon footprint.

·         The use of an electronic slogan in an email signature promoting “Save a tree. Don’t print this email unless it is necessary”.

Oliver Butler, President of Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, commented: “Echoing the theme of WED - Green Economy: Does it include you, Bureau Veritas is delighted to participate and contribute to these WED initiatives that promote the importance of conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources with our employees worldwide. We are also increasingly active in supporting our clients as they implement sustainability throughout their supply chains through the development of environmentally friendly footprints for products and the management of hazardous chemicals.”
