Bureau Veritas to class LNG-fuelled ferry

17/03/15

Bureau Veritas has confirmed that it will class AS Tallink Grupp’s LNG-fuelled ferry, which will be built by Meyer Turku for delivery in 2017.

The high speed LNG-fuelled ferry, which will run on the Helsinki (Finland) to Tallinn (Estonia) route, will have a service speed of 27 knots. It is designed to operate in icy waters and for fast cargo and passenger turnaround at each end of the route.

Tecnitas, a subsidiary of Bureau Veritas, has carried out risk assessment studies for the LNG bunker operations in the Helsinki and Tallinn ports, and the company will also carry out HAZID studies for the proposed LNG propulsion and storage on board the ferry. LNG bunkering will be carried out in either port by truck or bunkering barge.

Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice-President and Managing Director of the Marine and Offshore Division, Bureau Veritas, commented: "Bureau Veritas has extensive experience with LNG as a fuel and with ground breaking major passenger ship projects. We bring the two areas of expertise together with this project which will allow the vessel to meet strict air emission control limits in the Baltic area. "

“This is a demanding route over a short distance with a very high capacity vessel which will operate from early morning to late at night with short turnaround time and which will have to cope with severe winter conditions. Bureau Veritas will also provide statutory certification on behalf of the Estonian flag."
