Bureau Veritas is now a Recognised Certification Body for ResponsibleSteel, a multi-stakeholder organisation, founded to bring together businesses, civil society, and downstream steel users, to provide a global standard and certification initiative for the steel industry.
Including mining, steel production, scrap metal supply chain, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, workers' rights, communities, and biodiversity, ResponsibleSteel has built a consensus on what sustainability looks like for the steel industry. Their members include steel makers, mining companies, steel buyers in the automotive and construction industries as well as civil society organizations focused on labour rights, biodiversity, climate change, etc. Currently, they have over 130 members and 13% of global steel production members.
This appointment will enable ResponsibleSteel to develop and implement a certification program for steel. This will ensure that the industry maintains the highest sustainability standards. Their mission is to maximize steel's contribution to a sustainable society. It can be achieved by net zero carbon emissions within the steel sector. In addition, it can be enhanced by enhancing the responsible sourcing, production, use, and recycling of steel.
Amit Ghosh, Senior Vice-President CIF South Asia Region highlighted, “Bureau Veritas India is delighted to join ResponsibleSteel as an authorised certification body. This demonstrates our commitment to supporting our clients in the steel industry by managing their sustainability risks as they accelerate their journey to decarbonization and sustainable growth."
In line with this, the CEO of ResponsibleSteel, Annie Heaton quoted, “We’re looking forward to working closely with Bureau Veritas as we drive progress towards the responsible production of net zero steel. We can only do this through the careful scrutiny and expertise of our certification bodies. Bureau Veritas joins a unique community committed to the credible independent verification of steel sites against the ResponsibleSteel International Standard.”
